KAITHAL: Cyber thugs adopt various tactics and make common people victims of cyber fraud. SP Upasana said that for some time now, complaints of a special type of cyber crimes are being seen, in which common citizens are being cheated on a large scale by making calls/Whatsapp calls in the name of a senior officer of any investigating agency ororganization.
SP Upasana said that for some time now a special type of crime is being seen, in which cyber criminals contact the general public through calls or WhatsApp calls. Suspicious persons call and scare you, saying that a parcel has been sent using your PAN/Aadhaar card, containing narcotics. Fraudsters sometimes call, sometimes make WhatsApp video call, impersonating the name of an officer of investigating agency like NCB/CBI/NIA etc., and say that they have caught a parcel in your name, which contains narcotics material. Sometimes fraudsters demand money in the name of paying court fees or bail or removing your name from the case. Sometimes people are also asked to talk to a police officer on video call.
While on a video call, you are given a fake notice, in which you are asked to stay at home under digital arrest. And you are told to lock yourself in a room and answer all their questions. It is also said that you have to remain in front of the camera, if anyone else comes in the room then both of you will be arrested. Gradually you are intimidated more and more and your personal information and information about accounts and various investments are taken from you. Lastly having said that perhaps you have been wrongly implicated, you may deposit your money in an RBI/Government of India account till the investigation is completed, which will be returned to you after the investigation is completed. During this entire process you are neither given a chance to contact anyone, nor are you allowed to go out and thus a huge amount of money is collected from you. Do not answer calls, WhatsApp calls/Video calls,
