AUCKLAND: The Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib and Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajjtoday participated in a free food drive organized by the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand with the support of the sangat at Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib Takanini.

On the occasion, he performed an ardas (Sikh prayer) and formally inaugurated the distribution of free food, during which more than 1, 000 food kits were distributed among the local needy community.

Speaking after the ardas, Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said that the Sikh principle initiated by Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Gurdwara Sacha Sauda Sahib—when he started langar for the needy with just 20 rupees—continues to bear fruit across the world today. He said that the same spirit was clearly reflected through this free food drive organized by the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand and its entire team.

He further noted that the organization had rendered remarkable services during the COVID-19 period, contributing significantly to the welfare of humanity. He added that such Sikh initiatives have also been appreciated by the New Zealand government, bringing pride to the Sikh community.

Highlighting the essence of Sikh service, he said that such efforts symbolize equality among all human beings, transcending divisions of caste, color, race, status, and wealth, and ensuring help reaches every needy individual. He added that these initiatives have highlighted the distinct identity of Sikhs globally and strengthened the spirit.

The Jathedar congratulated Daljit Singh, President of the Central Sikh Association New Zealand and spokesperson of the Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand, along with his entire team for their efforts. He said that their work in bringing various gurdwaras in New Zealand under one platform and connecting them with Sri Akal Takht Sahib is commendable. He also offered prayers for the well-being and prosperity of all Sikhs and other communities residing in New Zealand.

During the event, Maungakiekie Member of Parliament Greg Fleming was also present and appreciated the Sikh-led free food drive. He thanked the Sikh community for their generosity and said that Sikhs serve humanity selflessly without any discrimination.

Other dignitaries present included local leader Emma Chatterton, Councillor Daniel Newman, Local Board Chair Calvin Hewitt, S. Kharak Singh, Marshall Walia, Secretary Lally Ranvir Singh, President Kartar Singh, Treasurer Manjinder Singh, and Jaskaran Singh, among others.

Earlier, the local Māori community extended a traditional and warm welcome to Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj upon his arrival at Papakura Marae.
Representatives of the Māori community held discussions with the Jathedar on their respective cultures and traditions.

They clarified that they have no connection with certain elements who had recently opposed a Sikh Nagar Kirtan in New Zealand by misusing the Haka tradition. The Māori representatives expressed deep respect for Sikh principles and traditions and affirmed that they stand shoulder to shoulder with the Sikh community.

They further stated that although they generally do not allow weapons inside their marae, they made a special exception to welcome Jathedar Gargajj along with the Sri Sahib (sword), considering the Sikh community as their own.
