SURREY, B.C.: Three men are in police custody following an alleged extortion-related shooting at a residence in Surrey’s Crescent Beach neighbourhood early Sunday morning.
According to a Surrey Police Service (SPS) news release, officers on patrol responded to reports of shots fired near Crescent Road and 132 Street around 3:50 a.m. PT. Firefighters later extinguished a small fire near a fence on the property, and police confirmed the house sustained damage from gunfire. No injuries were reported.
Police located a suspect vehicle nearby, but its occupants fled on foot. The trio was arrested shortly afterward near 28 Avenue and 140 Street after entering a rideshare vehicle.
At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said officers believe the rideshare vehicle was obtained shortly before it was stopped.
“It was safely stopped, we identified the rideshare driver, and the three individuals inside were safely taken into custody, ” Houghton said.
No weapons have been recovered so far. The men have not yet been charged, and investigators are examining whether they are directly connected to the shooting.
On Monday, the authorities released the names and photographs of the accused. One of whom was a teenager, Taranveer Singh, aged 19. Other two, both aged 21, were identified as Harjot Singh and Dayajeet Singh Billing. According to authorities, all three were "charged with one count of discharging a firearm into a place contrary to section 244.2(1)(a) of the Criminal Code."
