DHARAMSALA: A tragic paragliding accident at the world-famous Bir Billing site in Kangra district claimed the life of an experienced pilot on Saturday, prompting authorities and operators to suspend all paragliding activities for the day as a mark of respect.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when a tandem paraglider took off from the Billing launch point. According to officials, the glider reportedly developed a technical malfunction shortly after take-off, lost stability mid-air, and crashed near the road below the launch site.
The pilot, identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Barot in Mandi district, sustained critical injuries in the crash. Local residents, along with rescue personnel, rushed to the spot and shifted both the pilot and the tourist accompanying him to a nearby hospital. However, Mohan Singh succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital. The tourist also sustained injuries but is reported to be out of danger after receiving first aid.
Following the incident, authorities registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Officials are examining whether the crash resulted from a technical fault, human error, or adverse weather conditions.
The mishap has once again raised serious concerns over safety measures at adventure sports destinations, particularly with regard to regular equipment inspections, pilot certification, and strict adherence to prescribed safety protocols.
District Tourism Development Officer (DTDTO), Kangra, Vinay Kumar, said that all relevant documents and details related to the accident have been sought from the marshals and technical advisors deployed at the site. “Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation report, ” he added.
