Register criminal case against DSP and SHO responsible for barbaric assault on safai sewaks: Sukhbir Singh Badal
BARNALA: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded a criminal case be registered against DSP Satvir Singh Bains and SHO Lakhvinder Singh for the barbaric assault on ‘safai sewaks’ on July 22 and that they should be arrested and face trial.
The SAD president interacted with sanitation workers here besides visiting those who were severely injured in the lathi charge at the civil hospital here. The safai sewaks said police men even assaulted women sanitation workers with the purpose of teaching them a lesson. They also lauded the erstwhile SAD government for regularizing the services of 9,500 sanitation workers while asserting that both the previous Congress and present Aam Aadmi Party government had failed them. The SAD president assured them that it would regularize their services once the SAD formed the government in 2027.
Asserting that democratic protests could not be suppressed in this manner, Mr Sukhbir Badal said both chief minister Bhagwant Mann and local bodies minister Harjot Bains were responsible for the entire situation. “The AAP government assured the sanitation workers during the run up to the municipal elections that all their demands would be considered sympathetically and resolved. However once the elections were held the government reneged on its promise resulting in the strike by the safai sewaks. Now instead of holding discussions and regularizing their services as promised, it is trying to suppress their agitation through force”.
Mr Badal said the AAP government was following this template while dealing with all peaceful agitations in the State despite shedding crocodile tears for students who were lathi charged in Delhi. “Recently we have witnessed farmers being beaten up. PSPCL lineman agitating for their rights were beaten up brutally. Similarly MNREGA workers were ‘lathi charged’ while sitting in a peaceful dharna in Khanna. Now the police have used force to deal with protesting sanitation workers in Barnala. It seems the government has come out with a Lathi Charge Yojna”, he added.
Answering a media query, the SAD president said the AAP government could not escape accountability for the six examination paper leaks during its tenure in office. He said the government was now trying to change the narrative by asserting that the entire issue was one of cheating whereas the truth was that the cheating mafia along with the AAP leadership had indulged in paper leaks to enrich themselves at the cost of the future of the students of Punjab. “We will not allow this to pass. The SAD will conduct a Statewide agitation to ensure all those responsible for these paper leaks, including ministers, are brought to book and punished”.
Senior party leaders Kulwant Singh Kanta and Satnam Singh Rahi, Bittu Diwana, Sant Balbir Singh Ghunas, Razia Sultana and Balwant Kaur Khaira, accompanied the SAD president on the occasion.
