Centre for Social Work, Panjab University Organises Special Lecture on Child Protection
CHANDIGARH: The Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today organised a special lecture on “Child Protection: Social Worker’s Role, Practice and Scope”. The session was delivered by Ms Gurjot Sohi, RSW, a Master of Social Work graduate from the University of Windsor, Canada.
During the lecture, Ms Sohi shared valuable insights into child protection policies and practices in Canada and discussed their relevance to various areas of social work, including community organisation, mental health, and casework. She highlighted the crucial role of social workers in ensuring children's safety, promoting their mental well-being, protecting their rights, and strengthening community support systems.
She also discussed social issues related to child protection that are common across different parts of the world, including both Asian and European countries. She emphasised that, despite differences in social and cultural contexts, many challenges faced by children and families require similar professional approaches and coordinated interventions.
The speaker further emphasised the importance of professional intervention, case management, multidisciplinary coordination, and community participation in safeguarding children's rights and welfare. The interactive session provided students with an opportunity to connect classroom learning with international social work practices and broaden their understanding of child protection frameworks.
Faculty members and students actively participated in the discussion, making the lecture an enriching academic experience. Prof. Monica Munjial Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, expressed her gratitude to Ms Sohi for sharing her expertise and international professional experience with the students and faculty.
