Workshop on Language, Literature and Religious Studies Concluded in Panjab University Chandigarh
CHANDIGARH: A five-day workshop entitled ‘Language, Literature and Religious Studies: Marxism to Post-Colonial Studies’ was held in the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies from 03–07 August 2026. The workshop coordinator and resource person was Prof. Gurpal Singh, Academic In-charge of the Department. The main themes of the workshop were the nature of religion, literature and academics; their interrelations, contradictions and points of discussion; thesis, antithesis and synthesis; and theories, practices and dynamics.
The workshop explored academic debates, the history and study of religion, literature and language through the lenses of classical thought, Marxism, modernism, postmodernism, structuralism, post-structuralism, gender and caste debates, deconstruction, and post-colonialism.
On the last day, Dr Manmohan Singh, Head of Punjabi Sahit Akadami, Chandigarh, was the chief guest. He said that the relationship between language, literature and religion is inseparable. Every religion has its own unique language and literature. Language, literature and religion are mutually correlated. Literature broadens the understanding of religion. Any religion can be better understood in its own language and cultural context. Other languages cannot fully convey the true meaning and essence of any religion.
Many students, researchers, scholars and faculty members participated in the workshop.
