Panthic conference at Baba Bakala Sahib unanimously asked the government to immediately remove objectionable provisions from the sacrilege Act
BABA BAKALA: A grand Panthic conference was organised here today by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee under the patronage of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to discuss the provisions of the “Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026” passed by the Punjab Government, which are being objected to by the Sikh Panth.
The speakers said that the Panth has objections to the relevant provisions, the government should not shy away from making amendments according to Sikh sentiments, leaving behind its dogmas.
Speaking on the occasion, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, said that this law passed by the government is sweet poison, which cannot be accepted for the future of the nation. He said that this is a move of the government to directly interfere in Sikh institutions, which the nation understands very well. He said that the Khalsa Panth agrees with strict punishments for the culprits of sacrilege, but the nation has a big objection to the provisions related to the dignity and service parties in the law. The Punjab government's Vidhan Sabha has tried to control the Guru Granth and the Guru Panth with this law. He said that the Punjab Vidhan Sabha does not represent the Guru Khalsa Panth nor can it lay down the rules of religion and this is an interference in the rights of the Panth by the government. He said that governments come and go, but Sri Akal Takht Sahib is eternal. The government cannot impose laws on the Sikhs as per its own wishes without the consent of the Sikhs.
Jathedar Gargajj said that the real issue was to arrest the culprits of sacrilege and give them strict punishment. He said that Sikhs need to understand which powers are there which have been continuously hurting the respect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji for a long time. He said that the Dera Sirsa chief has a hand in the sacrilege cases of 2015, but the government has not arrested him and brought him to Punjab till date and has not punished him. Rather, the consent of the government's lawyers to transfer the sacrilege cases out of Punjab is saving the culprits.
He said that the government was given 15 days, which has been completed and the government has not even mentioned considering the objections of the Sikhs. On the contrary, the Chief Minister is making arrogant statements, which is tantamount to a direct challenge to Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
He said that after the martyrdom week of the June 1984 Ghallughara massacre, a meeting of the five Singh Sahibs will be held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib to take note of this attitude of the government. He said that now a strict decision will be taken, not addressing the government but the Khalsa Panth.
Speaking on the occasion, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that no one has any objection to the strict punishment of the culprits of sacrilege in the act passed by the government, but some of the clauses in it are going to distance the Sikh congregation from Gurbani. He said that even after continuous objections from Sikh intellectuals and congregations, the stubborn attitude of the government is a manifestation of its anti-Sikh mentality.
He said that today's huge gathering has proved that Sikhs will not tolerate government interference in their religious affairs.
Advocate Dhami asked the government to immediately remove the objectionable clauses in the act, considering the Sikh sentiments. SGPC President Advocate Dhami presented a resolution expressing the Panthic sentiments, which was approved by all Sikh organizations and the congregation present amidst cheers.
The conference was attended by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Chief Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Singh Sahib Giani Amarjit Singh, Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Giani Tek Singh, Singh Sahib Giani Baljit Singh, Head of Damdami Taksal Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, Head of Shiromani Panth Akali Buddha Dal Baba Balbir Singh 96th Crore, Head of Misl Shaheed Tarna Dal Baba Nihal Singh Harian Velan, Head of Dal Baba Bidhi Chand Baba Avtar Singh Sursingh, Head of Tarna Dal Baba Bakala Baba Joga Singh, along with various Sikh sects, organizations, Sikh intellectuals and a large number of Sangat from all over Punjab.
