Delegation Led by Surinder Dhanda Meets SP Madhavi Sharma, Raises Concerns Over Law and Order in Phagwara

PHAGWARA: A delegation of prominent residents of Phagwara, led by Ambedkar Sena Punjab President Surinder Dhanda, met Superintendent of Police (SP) Madhavi Sharma on Sunday to highlight several law and order issues affecting the city and urged the police administration to take timely and effective corrective measures.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Surinder Dhanda, along with Sukhwinder Singh Shergill and Engineer Pradeep Mall, alleged that the SP’s attitude towards the public was neither courteous nor responsive. They claimed that if senior officers fail to engage respectfully with citizens, it becomes difficult for the public to expect better conduct from subordinate staff.

The delegation submitted a memorandum outlining a range of civic and law enforcement concerns, including the alleged rise in drug abuse, thefts, frequent street altercations, and the alleged operation of a prostitution racket in the vicinity of a university during nighttime. They urged the police to take stringent action to curb these activities and restore public confidence.

The members also drew the SP’s attention to tensions between two rival groups in Mohalla Kaulsar, expressing apprehension that the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar installed in a local park could be vandalised if preventive measures are not taken in time.

Another major issue raised during the meeting was the closure of the crossing at Mata Chintpurni Chowk (Sugar Mill Chowk), which, according to the delegation, has caused severe inconvenience to commuters. They said the traffic disruption particularly affects residents travelling from the Nakodar side as well as people from Satnampura, Bhagatpura, Hadiabad and several nearby villages, resulting in increased hardship for daily commuters.

The delegation further alleged that the response they received during the meeting suggested that the concerns of city residents and public safety were not being treated with the seriousness they deserved. They warned that if any damage is caused to the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, if an accident occurs due to the closure of the Sugar Mill Chowk crossing, or if the alleged illegal activities around the university continue unchecked, like-minded organisations would be compelled to launch a strong protest, holding the police administration and SP Madhavi Sharma responsible.

Among those present during the meeting were Pushpinder Kaur, Parminder Bodh, Ram Murti Khera, Arun Sharma, Manoj Kumar, Mandeep Sonu and other prominent citizens.
