AMRITSAR: Akal Takht Jathedar today directed the Punjab Govt to amend sacrilege law within one month and put it oh hold on hold the act till the time amendments are made. MLAs were summoned by Jathedar following failure of government to amend the act as directed by theAkal Takht.
Jathedar who heard the Sikh MLAs of all political parties said that Punjab government shall made amendments in Jagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 with in a month. He said that Punjab government had no right to interfere in the affairs of Sikh community.He said that Sikhs had never allowed interference in the religious affairs of Sikhs.
Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargajj later addressing the media said that I had earlier suggested amendments in the Act. All Sikh bodies held a meeting on May 3. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan was summoned and a draft was given to him but no action was taken. He said that 87 MLAs of all parties attended the meeting and discussed the issue with open mind. He said that giving unique number on Gurur Granth Sahib is not allowed in Rehat Maryada.
Harpal Singh Cheema Finance minister said that Jathedar of Akal Takht would send the amendments to speaker and then the cabinet will consider it.
