What NRI Families Should Know Before Travelling from Dubai to the UK

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | July 29, 2025 06:35 PM

For many NRI families living in the Gulf, especially those with strong roots in Punjab and across India, the United Kingdom remains a cherished destination—be it for vacations, family reunions, or educational pursuits for the next generation. With increasing flight connectivity and evolving visa norms, traveling from Dubai to the UK has become more accessible than ever.

For instance, securing a budget-friendly Dubai to London flight is often the first step in trip planning. Comparing fares early, perhaps even during the quieter periods after Diwali or before the summer rush, and understanding seasonal trends can save families both time and money, making that visit to relatives in Southall or getting kids settled for university in Manchester more feasible.

Visa and Documentation Tips

UK visa processing for residents of the UAE typically takes 15 to 20 working days for a standard visitor visa, though processing times can vary significantly based on individual circumstances and may extend to several weeks or even months during peak periods. Families should ensure all documentation is current, especially when traveling with children, and consider the processing times carefully when planning their travel.

Important Update: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for UAE Passport Holders

For UAE passport holders, the UK has replaced the Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) system with a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system as of February 22, 2024. UAE citizens can now visit the UK for up to six months without a traditional visa by obtaining an ETA, which:

- Costs £16 per application (as of April 9, 2025)

- Is valid for two years from the date of issue (or until the passport it's linked to expires, whichever comes first)

- Allows multiple visits during the validity period (each visit up to 6 months)

- Must be applied for online or through the UK ETA mobile app

- Typically takes up to 3 business days to process

- Can be applied between 3 months and 48 hours before travel

Note: You do not need an ETA if you already have a valid UK visa for visit, study, work, or residence purposes.

Booking flights only after receiving visa confirmations or ETA approval is a safer approach, although flexible fare options can provide some buffer, especially if you're keen to attend specific family events or festivals.

Pacing Essentials for Families

From essential medicines with proper prescriptions to culturally specific snacks for kids that might be hard to find initially in new UK neighborhoods, packing for intercontinental travel requires foresight. While Indian grocery stores and Punjabi sweets shops are common across areas like Southall, Ilford, or Leicester, prices and availability can vary—especially in non-Asian neighborhoods.

Mind the Calendar: Festival & School Holiday Rush

Travel demand surges during Diwali, Eid, and the summer vacations, which are key times for family visits and events in both the UAE and the UK. NRIs planning to visit the UK during these peak times should book tickets and accommodations at least three months in advance. This also ensures better choices for non-stop or short-layover flights, making the long journey with family more comfortable. Consider flying during off-peak months like September or February for potentially cheaper fares.

Know the Customs Rules - Important Warnings

NRIs are often caught off-guard by what can and cannot be brought into the UK, and violations can result in significant penalties.

Food Restrictions:

Strict rules apply to food items, particularly meat and dairy products, from non-EU countries like the UAE and India, due to biosecurity concerns. Travelers can face fines of up to £5, 000 for bringing prohibited items. You should avoid carrying homemade sweets containing dairy or any meat products. Additionally, do not bring honey, eggs, or most animal-derived products

Permitted items include: chocolate, confectionery, bread, cakes, biscuits, pasta (without meat), and up to 2kg of powdered infant milk or special medical foods (provided they are commercially packaged and for personal use).

Cash Declaration:

You must declare cash (notes, coins, cheques) equivalent to £10, 000 or more when entering or leaving the UK. This applies to families traveling together - if your combined cash exceeds £10, 000, you must declare it even if individuals carry less than this amount. Failure to declare can result in seizure of all cash and penalties up to £5, 000.

General Advice:

Always declare any items you're unsure about and stay informed through the official UK government's guidelines (gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use). This is particularly important for those bringing items for family, such as traditional Indian spices or specific food ingredients. When in doubt, check what's permissible before packing, as ignorance of the rules can lead to significant fines or confiscation.
