AMRITSAR: The Officiating Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, has strongly condemned the policy of exerting direct or indirect pressure on the Ghumman brothers, the lawyers representing the case of Sandeep Singh of Amritsar, who is currently detained in Sangrur Jail.
He termed this act extremely deplorable and biased.
He stated that Sandeep Singh has every right to seek legal assistance from any lawyer of his choice to defend himself in whatever legal proceedings are initiated against him. He further said that the pressure being exerted on the Ghumman brothers appears to be part of a government policy, which is neither just nor impartial.
Jathedar Gargajj noted that after Sandeep Singh was subjected to torture by the jail and police administration, his medical examination was initially not conducted despite court orders. Sikhs expressed strong resentment over this and the delay was widely condemned. He added that some Sikh organizations even had to stage protests against the jail and police administration.
In such a situation, if the Ghumman brothers, as lawyers of Sandeep Singh, have shared information with the people of Punjab through the media about the torture inflicted on him, there is nothing wrong in it.
He said that if the details of the torture had not been made public, the violation of his rights would have continued, and this would have been a grave injustice to him.
Jathedar Gargajj emphasized that it is the responsibility of the government to safeguard the human rights of detainees, not to allow torture or cover up such actions.
He declared that the Ghumman brothers’ firm stand in fighting Sandeep Singh’s case has the full support of the Sikh community and Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
He also strongly condemned the recent attack on Sikh lawyer Advocate Simarjeet Singh in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by some lawyers and demanded action against those guilty of the incident. He said that while no action has been taken so far in the case of the assault on Advocate Simarjeet Singh, the administration seems to be working actively on a policy of pressuring those connected with the Sandeep Singh case, which raises serious doubts about its functioning.
