Panjab University Senate election to be held on Sept 9, VP approves proposal after 26 days of protest

CHANDIGARH: Vice President of India who is also Chancellor of Panjab University Chandigarh has approved the proposal sent by Vice Chancellor to hold Senate elections on September 9 after 26 days of protest by the students and social groups. 

The elections for various constituencies will be held between September 9 and October 4, 2026, officials said on Thursday.

The students had formed Panjab University Bachao Morcha which launched the protest against center government's decision to scrap senate of the university. It was alleged that center government wanted to grab the control of university and implement the RSS agenda. Large number of people from all over the Punjab had joined the agitation. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had also demanded senate elections. 

The Panjab University Bachao Morcha had thanked the center government and the people who participated in the agitation. The center government had earlier withdrawn the notification to scrap the senate and syndicate.
