Tarsem Singh Honoured on Independence Day for Preserving Wood Carving and Sculpture Art
PATIALA: During the district-level Independence Day समारोह, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian honoured renowned Patiala craftsman and sculptor Tarsem Singh with a certificate of appreciation for his significant contribution to the field of handicrafts. Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal, SSP Varun Sharma and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
A resident of Ekta Vihar, Patiala, Tarsem Singh has been associated with wood carving and sculpture for nearly 30 years. He learned this traditional skill from his father, Balwinder Singh. His family has been associated for several generations with traditional occupations including woodworking, blacksmithing and masonry.
After battling appendix cancer in December 2024, Tarsem Singh’s health made it difficult for him to continue working with heavy wood. Despite this, he did not lose courage. Giving a new direction to his art, he began creating wooden sculptures. His artworks reflect his creativity, hard work and determination.
As a fine woodcarver and sculptor, Tarsem Singh is working to preserve Punjab’s traditional woodcraft and pass the skill on to the next generation. In addition, he is actively contributing to the mission of keeping the city clean through his association with the NGO ‘Mera Patiala Main Hi Sawaran’.
In recognition of Tarsem Singh’s artistic work, his dedication to preserving traditional skills and his contribution to social service, the Patiala district administration conferred this honour on him.
