Save Your Village’ Campaign Receives Overwhelming Public Support
PHAGWARA: The ‘Apna Pind Sambhalo’ (Save Your Village) campaign launched by Rajya Sabha Member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal is receiving an overwhelming response from the people. Today, residents of around half a dozen villages participated in a gathering held at Gaushala Fatehwal Mand. A second gathering was organised at village Sarupwal, where people from several surrounding villages were urged to come forward and take responsibility for the development, safety and well-being of their respective villages.
The campaign has generated a strong sense of confidence and participation among the people.
Sultanpur Lodhi SDM Jaspreet Singh, DSP Dharender Verma, Naib Tehsildar Bhisham Pandey, EO Kamaljit Singh, along with officials from the Drainage Department and Mandi Board, were also present at the public meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said that the villages of the Mand area must be made completely free from drugs. He said efforts would be made for the rehabilitation of young people who have become addicted to drugs, particularly those addicted to ‘chitta’. He urged villagers to work collectively to prevent drug peddlers from entering their villages and to revive thikri pehra (night watch) systems to protect residents from theft and robbery.
Sant Seechewal also instructed the DSP present at the meeting to ensure that the identity of people providing information about drug dealers remains strictly confidential.
Residents of dozens of villages in the area expressed their gratitude to Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal for the construction of the metalled road being undertaken by the Mandi Board up to Gaushala Fatehwal.
The villagers unanimously said that they had never expected such a road to be constructed in the Mand area. They credited Sant Seechewal’s continued efforts and vigilance for making the project possible. The road will connect the Dhussi Bund with the Advance Bund.
Following the gathering, Sant Seechewal also visited the Advance Bund. Farmers from the area said that residents of all the villages had made joint efforts in constructing the bund. The Drainage Department has also installed stones along a major portion of the bund to strengthen it.
During the visit, Sant Seechewal observed the impact of the strong flow of the Beas River on the bund. He pointed out that at places where stones had been installed, the force of the water was pushing back towards the bund. He said that the affected portions needed to be repaired and strengthened on a priority basis.
Residents of Ahli Kalan, Ahli Khurd, Hussainpur Bulewal, Kabirpur, Aluwal, Sarupwal and several other villages attended the gathering and raised their concerns.
The SDM also heard grievances relating to houses falling within the Lal Dora, inclusion of names in voter lists being prepared under SIR, and people who had not yet received compensation for flood-related losses.
