KAPURTHALA: Tension prevailed at the Government High School in Sheikhu Pura, Kapurthala, on Wednesday when a large number of students closed the school’s main gate and staged a protest against the government and administration over a number of issues, including the transfer of a popular teacher.
The protesting students primarily demanded cancellation of the teacher’s transfer, arguing that his departure would adversely affect their studies. They said the teacher was popular among students and played an important role in their academic activities, and urged the authorities to reconsider the transfer in the interest of the students.
The students also raised a serious safety concern regarding high-voltage electricity wires passing close to a bathroom located within the school premises. They demanded that the wires be shifted outside the school campus or relocated to a safe place to prevent any possible danger to students and staff. The students maintained that safety of children should be given priority and that the presence of high-voltage wires near a frequently used area of the school required immediate attention.
As news of the protest reached the authorities, DSP Sub-Division Sheetal Singh reached the school along with a police force. The DSP interacted with the protesting students and their parents and listened to their grievances in detail. He assured them that their genuine demands would be brought to the notice of senior officials and that efforts would be made to resolve the issues at the earliest.
The protest also attracted political attention, with leaders from different political parties reaching the school after learning about the situation. The leaders extended support to the students’ demands and called upon the authorities to reconsider the teacher’s transfer. They also demanded immediate safety measures concerning the high-voltage electricity wires passing through the school premises.
The political leaders stressed that the safety of schoolchildren could not be compromised under any circumstances and urged the concerned departments to take necessary action without delay.
Following discussions with the police administration and the assurance given by DSP Sheetal Singh, the students agreed to call off their protest. They subsequently opened the school’s main gate, following which classes resumed normally.
During the interaction, DSP Sheetal Singh also heard the views of the school administration, students and parents. The situation was brought under control through dialogue and remained peaceful. However, the focus now shifts to the concerned departments and senior authorities, who will have to decide what action is taken on the students’ demands regarding the teacher’s transfer and the high-voltage electricity wires.
The incident has highlighted both academic concerns among the students and a safety issue within the school premises, with parents and students awaiting concrete action from the authorities.
