KAPURTHALA: The I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKG PTU) main campus Kapurthala organized an insightful and creative guest lecture to commemorate "World Photography Day". This event was initiated & executed by University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The programme aimed to acquaint students with the practical aspects of photography and enhance their understanding of visual storytelling, composition and professional practices in the field of journalism and mass communication.
The resource person for the occasion was Mr. Karamveer Sandhu, a professional photographer cum renowned Photojournalist with over three decades of experience in the same field. Through an engaging and highly practical session, he shared his professional experiences and valuable insights into the art and craft of photography.
The event was conducted under the mentorship of Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yadwinder Singh Brar & he joined event as Chief Guest and Registrar Dr. Navdeepak Sandhu was present as guest of honor. Both esteemed authorities graced the occasion and congratulated the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, its faculty members and students for organizing such a creative and practically oriented programme.
Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Yadwinder Singh Brar congratulated the Head of the Department, Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, for organizing the programme and appreciated the department’s efforts to provide students with meaningful exposure to professional and practical learning. Registrar Dr. Navdeepak Sandhu also appreciated the initiative and suggested that such a programme should be organized on a larger scale at the University level next year, enabling students from different departments and campuses to participate and benefit from interaction with professionals from the media industry.
The Head of the Department, Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, and Dr. Ekta Mahajan, Assistant Professor, extended a warm floral welcome to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yadwinder Singh Brar and the resource person Mr. Karamveer Sandhu. They also presented tokens of gratitude to the dignitaries and resource person for their valuable presence and contribution to the programme.
During the interactive session, Mr. Karamveer Sandhu explained the basic rules and essential principles of photography. He elaborated on the significance of lighting, composition, framing, perspective and timing in creating impactful photographs. Through examples from his professional work, he demonstrated how an ordinary moment can be transformed into a meaningful visual story through careful observation and creative framing.
He also introduced students to the importance of aspect ratio in photography and visual media, explaining how different ratios influence the composition, presentation and overall visual impact of an image. He discussed commonly used formats and explained how the selection of an appropriate aspect ratio depends upon the purpose, medium and platform for which a photograph is being created.
The students were further guided on how to select the right frame, maintain visual balance, use available light effectively and position the subject appropriately. Mr. Sandhu emphasized that a good photograph is not merely about operating a camera but about developing the ability to observe, anticipate and communicate a story through visuals.
Sharing photographs from his professional portfolio, he narrated several experiences from the field and explained the thought process behind capturing particular images. His practical examples helped students understand photography beyond theoretical concepts. He patiently answered the queries raised by the students and encouraged them to experiment with different perspectives and develop their own visual language.
On the occasion, a photography competition was also organized and judged by the guest speaker, Mr. Karamveer Sandhu. Students submitted still photographs on the theme “Nature, Emotion and Shadow.” The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 60 students, who showcased creativity, imagination and a keen understanding of photographic composition.
The participation was not limited to students from the University alone. Students from different states also participated in the competition and event, adding diversity and enthusiasm to the programme.
The winners in the different categories were Rahul, a student of M.A. JMC 1st Semester, in the Nature category; Abhinav, a student of B.A. JMC 3rd Semester, in the Shadow category; and Naveena, a student of M.A. JMC 3rd Semester, in the Emotion category. The winners were appreciated for their creative approach and their ability to communicate ideas and emotions through visual frames.
The programme also featured a special video presentation titled “Yaadein.” The voice-over for the video was rendered by the department’s proud alumnus Mr. Rajan Sahotra, a renowned media personality associated with the radio industry. The video was created by Abhinav, a student of B.A. JMC 3rd Semester.
The presentation added an emotional and memorable dimension to the programme and beautifully showcased the creative abilities of the department’s students and alumni. It also reflected the department’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to explore different dimensions of media production.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Ekta Mahajan, Assistant Professor, who expressed sincere gratitude to the resource person for sharing his valuable professional experiences and enriching the students’ knowledge.
Jiya, a student of the Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication, efficiently handled the stage and anchored the programme with confidence. The event was supported by the faculty members of the department, including Dr.Mangla Sahni, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Dr. Aabid Reza and Mr. H.K. Singh, who remained present throughout the programme to encourage and support the students.
