AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has pledged full support to the district administration for relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected areas of Amritsar district. In a high-level meeting held here, the university reaffirmed its commitment to transforming an adopted village into a model village under its social responsibility initiatives.
The meeting saw participation from MP Vikramjit Singh Sahni, MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner Shakshi Sahni, Additional Deputy Commissioner, SDM Ajnala, and GNDU officials. Discussions focused on immediate relief measures, restoration of basic infrastructure in affected villages, and long-term rehabilitation plans. The district administration assured all possible assistance.
GNDU Registrar Dr. K.S. Chahal stated that Vice-Chancellor Dr. Karmjeet Singh expressed the university’s vision to develop the adopted village as a model for others. “The committee tasked with this responsibility will work with dedication and integrity, ensuring not only the village’s development but also inspiring other institutions, ” he said.
The university’s National Service Scheme (NSS) team, led by Prof. (Dr.) Balbir Singh and Programme Officer Dr. Aditya Parihar, informed the administration that the initially assigned village was not severely impacted by floods. GNDU requested the allocation of a more affected village to enable its NSS volunteers to undertake long-term rehabilitation work.
Under Vice-Chancellor Dr. Karmjeet Singh’s directives, GNDU has launched a major campaign to aid flood victims. A high-powered action committee, comprising faculty, non-teaching staff, officers’ union, pensioners’ union, students, and alumni, has been formed. University employees have collectively donated over ₹50 lakh, equivalent to one day’s salary, to fund relief efforts.
Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that the adopted village will be developed as a model village, addressing all essential needs, from sanitation to residents’ welfare. Special focus will be on empowering youth and students through 53 skill development courses offered by the university. GNDU will also cover fees and other expenses for flood-affected students.
The district administration will soon allocate a new village to GNDU. Following a survey, the university will commence work immediately. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Karmjeet Singh will personally inaugurate the project and hinted that GNDU may adopt additional villages beyond the initial one.
During the meeting, GNDU and the district administration vowed to jointly support flood victims.
