AMRITSAR: In a major initiative to support flood-affected families in Punjab, the staff and faculty of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) have contributed nearly Rs 50 lakh, equivalent to one day’s salary, to the GNDU Relief Fund. The move was undertaken under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh, while Registrar Prof K.S. Chahal has been tasked with coordinating the effort.
The decision was unanimously backed by the Guru Nanak Dev University Non-Teaching Employees Association, Officers Association and Teachers Association. University officials confirmed that the amount would be deposited into the Relief Fund account by Wednesday, with the money directed towards providing essential supplies and rehabilitation assistance to flood victims.
As part of the relief operations, GNDU has constituted special teams of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) to set up relief camps in the flood-hit belt. Medical teams have also been placed on standby to provide medicines and other urgent support.
Meanwhile, a joint team of NSS volunteers and members of the University Gurudwara Sahib visited the flood-affected areas of Dera Baba Nanak and Ramdas to assess the ground realities. The team interacted with affected residents to understand their immediate needs, which include ration kits, clean drinking water, medicines, and temporary shelter.
Prof Karamjeet Singh said, “This is a time for all of us to stand united and extend support to those in distress. GNDU is committed to assisting the people of Punjab in every possible way during this challenging period.”
Registrar Prof K.S. Chahal emphasised that the relief operations would be carried out transparently and efficiently. A coordinator has been appointed to oversee the functioning of relief camps and medical services.
Union leaders welcomed the initiative, adding that the university’s united effort would bring much-needed aid to flood-hit communities. Residents of the affected villages expressed gratitude for the concern and timely outreach shown by GNDU..
