AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that a committee will be formed soon to consider the suggestions received regarding the appointment, qualification, responsibilities and retirement of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
In a statement, Advocate Dhami said that in the light of the resolution passed in the budget session of the Shiromani Committee, suggestions were sought from Sikh organizations, societies, intellectuals and Sikh institutions by May 20, 2025, under which a large number of suggestions have reached the Shiromani Committee.
A committee will be formed soon to evaluate them.
He said that representatives of various organizations, leaders of Sikh institutions and Sikh intellectuals will be included in this committee.
The Shiromani Committee President said that for a long time there has been a demand and discussion in the Sikh world regarding the formulation of rules and regulations regarding the appointment and retirement of Jathedar Sahib. Seeing this, the Shiromani Committee has initiated action and sought suggestions. Now, after considering the suggestions received, the rules will be finalized soon.
Meanwhile, Advocate Dhami said that an application was filed by the Shiromani Committee on January 14, 2024, with the support of the family of the Jathedar Sahib, to file a case to punish the accused in the case of torture and martyrdom of the former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Bhai Gurdev Singh Kaunke in police custody, whereas it has been rejected under the anti-Sikh intention of the Punjab government. Now, the Shiromani Committee has taken action against Jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaunke's son S. A petition has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court through Hari Singh, on which the Honorable Court has issued notice to the government and the concerned SHO of Jagraon police station and has fixed the next hearing for July 28, 2025. The Shiromani Committee President said that this is a very serious matter of the community and the Shiromani Committee will make serious efforts regarding it.
He criticized the Punjab government and said that this government, formed on false promises of providing justice to the people, is running away from providing justice to the family of the Jathedar of the Sikh community.
