AMRITSAR: The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, on Monday issued a strict directive to all parties concerned in the case related to the 328 sacred saroops (holy scriptures) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, ordering complete restraint until the investigation is concluded.
Emphasising that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the living, eternal Guru of the Sikhs and inseparable from the deepest sentiments of the Sikh community, the Jathedar said clear instructions had earlier been issued from Sri Akal Takht Sahib that no politics, allegations, haste or public statements should be made in the matter.
However, he noted that despite these directions, certain parties have continued to make statements and level allegations, while “media and social media trials” are being conducted. Such actions, he said, violate the spirit of the Akal Takht’s आदेश and hurt Sikh sentiments while creating confusion among the sangat.
The Jathedar categorically stated that until the investigation is completed and the truth established, it is unethical for any individual, organisation or media outlet to speak on the issue, interpret facts in their own way, or build narratives. He added that even the Punjab Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), concerned parties or their legal counsel have no authority to hold press conferences, indulge in politics, distort facts or pronounce judgments at their own level.
Giani Gargajj further directed all concerned to maintain dignity and restraint in their words and strictly comply with the Akal Takht’s आदेश. He also expressed concern over repeated leaks of information to the media whenever the police team moves for inquiry-related actions, describing the circulation of “planted news” as irresponsible and unserious.
Referring to the conduct of the investigation so far, the Jathedar observed that undue haste appeared to have been shown by the police in viewing the sacred saroops, while the Punjab government had also made public statements without a firm factual basis. Such actions, he warned, have hurt the sentiments of the Sikh sangat and could potentially lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state.
While affirming confidence in the competence of the present SIT, the Jathedar said it would be more appropriate if the investigation team comprised Amritdhari Sikhs with a proper understanding of Gurmat and Sikh maryada.
He concluded by stressing that the gravity of the issue demands patience, wisdom bestowed by the Gurus, and utmost respect for the honour of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, along with strict adherence to the sanctity and maryada of Gurdwara Sahibs at all times.
