President of India Confers Sangeet Natak Akademi Award on PU Professor
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University’s Department of Indian Theatre Chairperson Dr. Navdeep Kaur was conferred the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Akademi Puraskar) for 2025 in the field of Theatre – Direction by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at a special investiture ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, today.
Dr. Navdeep Kaur has been selected in the Theatre category for 2025 by the General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. The Akademi Awards recognise sustained individual work and contribution in the performing arts.

The honour is a significant recognition of Dr. Navdeep Kaur’s contribution to theatre direction and adds to the distinction of Panjab University’s Department of Indian Theatre, one of the University’s important centres for theatre education, practice and research.
A theatre director, academician and researcher, Dr. Navdeep Kaur is currently working as the Chairperson of Department of Indian Theatre. Her academic and creative work spans theatre, with her practice involving the direction and design of theatrical productions. Recent productions directed by her include ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ ,Kesariya Rangatha, Jasma odan,Heer Ranjha ‘Laal Lakeer’.
Dr Navdeep’s work has been deeply rooted in the folk theatre traditions of Punjab and diverse performance traditions from across the country. Through her philosophy of Total Theatre, she has consistently sought to bridge the gap between India’s cultural roots and contemporary sensibilities, creating productions that integrate indigenous performance practices with modern theatrical expression.
