UT Administration Finalises Power Department Transfer to CPDL

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | February 04, 2026 12:10 PM

CHANDIGARH: The UT Administration has formally completed the transfer of employees, assets, liabilities, obligations and ongoing proceedings of the erstwhile electricity wing of the UT Engineering Department to Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL), with effect from February 1.

The UT Engineering Department had earlier, on January 31, 2025, notified the Chandigarh Electricity Reforms Transfer Scheme, 2025, laying down the framework for transferring electricity distribution functions—along with all related assets, rights, interests, liabilities, obligations, proceedings and personnel—to CPDL.

Under the scheme, the transfers were initially made on a provisional basis for a period of 12 months from the date of transfer. This provision allowed the Chandigarh Administration the authority to alter, vary, modify or amend the terms of the transfer during the provisional period.

In a notification issued on January 30, the Administration clarified that the provisional phase has now ended. “The transfers within the scheme, as amended from time to time, have become final after the expiry of the period of 12 months as provided in the scheme, with effect from February 1, 2026, ” the notification stated. It further specified that the term “provisional transfer” used in the scheme shall henceforth be read as “final transfer.”
