Chandigarh Administration all set to make city plastic free

CHANDIGARH:Chandigarh Administration is all set to make city plastic free. It has already taken
steps to make Chandigarh Single use plastic free.

In its notification date 27.09.2019 and its
amendment dated 30.01.2020 and 01.07.2020 Chandigarh Administration has imposed complete
ban on Single Use Plastic Items: Single Use Plastic Cutlery (Plate, Cup, Glasses, Bowls, Forks, Knives,
Spoons, Stirrers and Straws), Thermocol/ Styrofoam Cutlery (Plate, Cup, Glasses, Bowls, etc), Single
Use Plastic Containers (Dish Bowl, Trays, Glasses, Lids) less than 250 micron used for
packaging/covering of food liquid items, Plastic (sold in the name of Silver/Aluminium) bag/pouch
for packing food items, Drinking Water Sealed Glasses & Plastic Mineral Water Pouch, Single Time
Use (Use and throw) Razors, Single time use (Use and throw) Pens, Use of Thermocol for Decoration
Purpose, Plastic Material for Decoration Purpose such as wrapping/packing, sheets, frills, garland,
confetti, party bloopers, plastic ribbons, etc, Non-woven Polypropylene Bags, Polythene/Plastic carry
bags with or without handle irrespective of size, shape & colour, Industrial Packaging (of any kind)
less than 50 microns, Single Use Plastic Containers less than 250 microns, Plastic Sachets with
Packaging capacity of 30 ml/30 gm & less and Plastic Sticks for Ear Buds, Balloons, Flags and Candies
etc.
Now, Government of India has amended its Plastic Rules in 2021 and banned following items
in addition of the above mentioned items with effect from 1st July 2022.
• Wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets,
• Plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron.
Chandigarh Administration, CPCC and MCC are conducting regular inspections and awareness
activities in the jurisdiction of the Chandigarh. Earlier in the month of January two big dealers of the
single use plastic items were raided in Sec 26 Chandigarh and in month of March raided at Industrial
area and seized banned single use items.  The action against the violators has been taken under the
provision of EPA 1986. For better enforcement of the same, CPCC had an interaction with
stakeholders including and updating them about the recent amendments, present status.
Earlier, in the month of the march, CPCC sealed 8 shops for violating the Chandigarh
Notification.  Public has failed to comply with the notification of the Chandigarh Administration w.r.t.
Ban on Single Use Plastic. It is informed to the public to stop the usage of the banned Single Use
plastic items in their day to day activities in the city or face the legal consequence.
