CHANDIGARH: The Semiconductor Research Centre, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Punjab Engineering, Chandigarh inaugurated a week-long Advanced workshop on ‘Semiconductor Device Design, Fabrication and Characterization’ in technical collaboration with IEEE Chandigarh Subsection and ISSE Chandigarh Chapter here on Monday.
The event began with Prof. Baldev Setia, Director PEC and Prof. Neena Gupta head of the department ECE giving a green welcome to the esteemed guests and lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Director of PEC, Prof. (Dr) Baldev Setia during his welcome note stated, that the Semiconductor Research Centre, ECE Department inaugurated by the President of India during the Century celebrations was enriched by the inclusion of advanced research and design-oriented equipment and has also been selected in the first cohort of 30 institutions to be supported under chips to startup program at Digital India week at Gandhinagar. Taking about the efforts of PEC in the Semiconductor Mission of India, he said “It is also an opportunity to develop the Chandigarh region as a self-reliant hub for the development of semiconductor technology.”
Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar mentioned that keeping everything in mind and the fact that India has huge human resources, especially the young population, we have to work in common areas like semiconductor technology, building a team and going forward with very aggressive manner. “India belongs to the young generation, we have to provide the opportunity so they can lead the country and this is the right time we should give the torch in their hand and train them and help them so that they can be the player in this area of semiconductor design, fabrication and characterization”.
Dr Jatinder K Arora PSCST focused on the importance of these workshops and how the initiative by department of ECE, PEC will help our young researchers in the future innovations.. ‘We could be the leader in the country if we position ourselves as a cohesive knowledge cluster in this domain’ she said. Dr Surinder Singh, Director SCL, Mohali, stating the importance of electronics and semiconductors in daily life talked about the need for India to be a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain and the Govt. initiatives and investments in the sector.
The session continued with the signing of an MoU between PEC, Chandigarh and SCL, Mohali, followed by Dharam Pal, Adviser to the Administrator addressing the audience. He highlighted the importance of semiconductors in our day-to-day life and the necessity of organizing these kinds of workshops. He appreciated the efforts of PEC to start with the initiative and ensured that such workshops will provide an insight into both theoretical as well as practical knowledge for design analysis and operation of semiconductor devices to meet the needs of thermal industry, space, defence and such organizations. Stating that the future of India is linked to semiconductors and chips, he encouraged all the major institutes and bright minds to collaborate under such workshops and wished all the participants best wishes.
Prof. Arun Kumar Singh, Coordinator of the workshop stated that the workshop has been designed to blend the theoretical knowledge with practical experience at the newly established Semiconductor Research Centre.
More than 85 applications from the participants of various institutions across the country were received out of which 25 applications were accepted based on their merit. During the workshop, MTech and PhD students of NIT, Jamia, IIT, Delhi University, DTU, NSUT, NITTTR, and INST IISER Mohali will be trained at Semiconductor Lab of ECE department, PEC. Also, faculty/ researchers from IIT, DRDO, Delhi University, and SCL will be sharing their thoughts. The Event concluded with Director PEC honouring the esteemed chief guest and guests of Honour with mementoes.
Dharam Pal, and Adviser to the Administrator was the chief guest for the inaugural ceremony. Prof. Rajeev Ahuja Director IIT Ropar, Dr Surinder Singh, Director SCL Mohali and Dr Jatinder K. Arora PSCST were the guest of honour for the session. The advanced workshop is fully funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (Department of Science and Technology) Government of India under ‘Accelerate Vigyan’ and will take place from July 11 to 17, 2022.
