NAPA Condemns Punjab University’s Draconian Affidavit Demand—Satnam Singh Chahal

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | June 22, 2025 09:16 AM

JALANDHAR: North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) strongly condemns the authoritarian and undemocratic decision by Punjab University to force students to sign affidavits pledging not to participate in protests or demonstrations. This draconian measure is not only a gross violation of constitutional freedoms but also a shameful assault on the very spirit of democracy and dissent that should thrive within academic institutions.

Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of NAPA, stated that this outrageous diktat represents a fascist mindset deeply embedded in a BJP-style model of governance, where student voices are crushed and activism is treated as a threat. Punjab University, once a proud institution that gave this nation some of its brightest intellectuals, freedom fighters, and reformers, now stands reduced to a mere puppet of dictatorial forces bent on silencing thought and resistance.

We strongly and unequivocally demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of this unconstitutional order. NAPA stands in full solidarity with the student community and democratic organisations across India. If this shameful directive is not revoked, the university administration must be prepared to face a united and powerful resistance from students, civil society, and defenders of democracy. Silence and submission will not be the legacy of Punjab University—resistance and reason will.
