KCVAS Launches Innovative Mobile App to Calculate Economic Losses from FMD and HS

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | January 04, 2026 12:34 AM

AMRITSAR: In a major technological leap for the livestock sector, the Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (KCVAS), Amritsar, has launched a first-of-its-kind mobile application designed to calculate the economic losses caused by Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS).

The application, developed under the expert guidance of Dr. H.K. Verma, Principal of KCVAS, was formally inaugurated today by Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, Pro-Chancellor, Khalsa University & Honorary Secretary of the Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC). Speaking at the launch,  Chhina praised the innovation as a vital tool for the farming community. "Livestock diseases don't just affect animal health; they break the backbone of the rural economy. This app will help farmers understand the hidden costs of diseases, encouraging them to adopt timely vaccination and preventive measures, "

Dr. H. K. Verma, the visionary behind the project, emphasized that while farmers recognize the symptoms of FMD and HS, they often underestimate the total financial impact. "This app bridges the gap between clinical diagnosis and economic reality. By inputting simple data, a farmer can see the exact loss in rupees, which serves as a powerful motivator for better herd management, " said Dr. Verma. This innovation is expected to assist not only individual farmers but also policymakers and researchers in collecting data on the economic impact of animal diseases in the region.

Further, the cyber extension approach enhances the reputation of KCVAS as a centre of excellence in veterinary education and extension services, contributing meaningfully to the livestock sector and rural economy. Managing Director, Dr. SK Nagpal congratulated the whole team for a nascent work for the cause of the Livestock farmers of the state.
