Experts discuss sexual harassment of women at workplace

MOHALI: The University School of Law of the Rayat Bahra University organized a workshop as part of International Women’s Day celebrations in collaboration with Human Rights Council, Women's Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI), Chandigarh.

The topic of workshop was `CEDAW: Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace’. The purpose of the workshop was empowerment of women and to discuss the sexual harassment laws at workplace in different countries. Special emphasis was on the implementation of recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in signatory countries.

At the inaugural session of the workshop, held in online mode, Dr Richa Rajan, Dean, University School of Law of the Rayat Bahra University, welcomed the participants in the workshop and discussed the agenda of organising the workshop.

Dr Richa Rajan read out a message from Chancellor Gurvinder Singh Bahra wherein he expressed optimism that deliberations in the workshop would prove useful in checking harassment of women at the workplace.

Dr Parvinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor, welcomed the Chief Guest and discussed various provisions of punishment for sexual offences in the IPC.

Dr Denise Fernandes, Director of Women Economic Forum For New Jersey, was the Chief Guest at the workshop. She is a Member of the White House Initiative on advancing educational equity excellence and economic opportunity under President Biden.

Dr Simrit Kahlon, former Chairperson of the Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh, discussed sexual harassment of women at workplace in the unorganized sector and also laid emphasis on sensitization of men against sexual harassment.

Dr Shpresa Delija, Professor of English Methodology, Applied linguistics and Psycholinguistics, University of Tirana, Albania, discussed necessary measures to be taken by employers at workplace to stop sexual exploitation dwelt on various laws prevailing against sexual harassment in Albania.

Deepika Bahri, CEO Antraajaal, and President of the Women's Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI), Chandigarh, discussed the principles of empowerment of women.
