How does Formula 4 work?

PUNJAB NEWS EXPRESS | April 01, 2026 05:08 PM

Formula 4 is an international entry-level category in single-seater motorsport designed to give young drivers their first experience racing cars after karting. It also aims to provide a clear step on the ladder toward higher formula series like Formula 3, Formula 2, and eventually Formula 1. Those latter disciplines are available to bet once you grab the 1xBet download app for your mobile device.

It was created by FIA in 2013 and the first championships began in 2014. The aim was to make the transition to car racing more accessible, structured and cost-controlled.

At its core, Formula 4 is a set of individual national or regional championships rather than a single global series. It is very simple to download the 1xBet app, which is available for Android and iOS and offers a wide range of motorsports bets.

Countries like Italy, Spain, Japan, Mexico (NACAM), the United Arab Emirates and increasingly others around the world run their own F4 championships under the FIA’s technical and sporting regulations.

What does a season and car look like

Each F4 championship typically runs multiple race weekends throughout a season, often including practice sessions, qualifying sessions and several races per round. For example, in many series, two 40-minute practice sessions and qualifying sessions determine the starting grids, followed by two or three races that may last about 30 minutes plus one lap each. Points are awarded based on finishing positions, commonly following a system similar to Formula 1 (for example, 25 for the winner, 18 for second, etc.).

 Drivers earn championship points throughout the season, and in FIA-sanctioned events they can also score Super License points, a requirement for advancing toward a F1 race seat. The number of points awarded depends on finishing position and the series’ status.

F4 cars are built to be:

  • safe;
  • reliable;
  • and relatively affordable.

They use specification chassis and engines chosen by each championship (but all meet FIA safety standards), keeping performance comparable across competitors so that driver skill is emphasised. Chassis are typically carbon-fibre monocoque designs, and engines are usually around 1.4-1.6 litres producing roughly 160-185 hp, with sequential gearboxes and controlled aerodynamic components.

Formula 4 is the first true step out of karting into car racing. It allows young drivers to learn about car setup, race strategy, tyre management and high-speed competition in a professional environment. Strong performance in F4 often leads drivers to higher formula categories such as Formula Regional, F3 and F2. This continues their development toward a possible career in F1 or other top-level motorsport.
