AMRITSAR: Several important resolutions were approved during the annual budget session of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

These include expressing serious concern over the attempts to erode the original and distinct identity of the Sikhs and appealing for unity against such tactics, the approach being adopted by the Punjab government regarding the Punjab Prevention of Crimes against Holy Religious Scriptures Bill 2025 and the confusion created by the statements being made by the Chief Minister, the demand for commutation of the sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana and release of the imprisoned Sikhs,

The important resolution passed expressed serious concern over the attempts being made from time to time to merge the original and distinct identity of the Sikh community under policy agendas, keeping in mind the great history, unwavering principles and unique religious traditions of the Sikh community.

The resolution said that such acts are not limited to targeting the distinct identity of the Sikh community, but are also a direct challenge to the sanctity, independent entity and high ideals of Sikhism provided to humanity. This phenomenon is related to the ideology being served on social media by the leaders of religious institutions of the majority communities as well as like-minded people towards minorities.

The resolution said that the Sikh community is a separate and independent religious community. It has its own great history, unique philosophy, different principles, values, festivals, way of life and manners. Sikhism has given humanity the high ideals of truth, justice, equality, brotherhood and service.

Another important resolution mentioned the approach being adopted by the Punjab government regarding the “Punjab Prevention of Offences against Sacred Religious Scriptures Bill 2025” and the statement being given by the Chief Minister, creating confusion among the Sangat, and also expressed serious concern over the continuously increasing cases of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

The resolution said that the political parties did politics on this issue to form governments, but could not express the feelings of the Sangat. During the tenure of the current government of Punjab, countless cases of sacrilege have come to light, but neither were they fully investigated nor were the culprits given exemplary punishments. Due to the lax performance of the government, the culprits are getting away with it.

The resolution called the current Punjab government’s lack of seriousness in this regard and termed the action being taken to enact strict laws to prevent sacrilege as a mere formal and arbitrary action.

The resolution said that 14 years have passed since the petition filed by Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana for commutation of sentence, but the approach being adopted towards this serious matter related to Sikh sentiments raises big questions on the policy and ethics of the government.

Another resolution also strongly condemned the attempt to forcibly occupy Miri Piri Medical College, Shahbad Markanda (Haryana). The resolution stated that such acts that weaken the Sikh institution will not be tolerated.

Apart from this, the condolence messages included the chanting of Moolmantar and Gurmantar in connection with the passing away of Baba Sucha Singh Karseva Qila Anandgarh Sahib, Shiromani Committee member S. Amir Singh Rasidan, former member Jathedar Surjit Singh Cheema, S. Bir Singh and S. Santokh Singh Khiranwali.
