PHILLAUR: A couple from village Jassian, near Ludhiana, has been identified as the winner of a ₹3 crore prize in the Punjab State Lottery, bringing an end to speculation surrounding the unclaimed ticket. The winning ticket, however, was purchased from Phillaur, which initially led to some confusion about the winner’s place of residence.
According to available details, the lottery draw was conducted on March 14, with the official results announced on March 14. The first prize of ₹3 crore corresponded to ticket number 791016. Despite widespread media coverage indicating that the winner had not yet come forward, the couple did not immediately realize that they held the winning ticket.
In a statement, the winners explained that they had come across news reports and television broadcasts mentioning the unclaimed prize but assumed it did not concern them. It was only two days later, while passing by the lottery vendor in Phillaur, that they were informed of their win. Upon verifying the ticket number, they confirmed that it matched the announced result, leading to what they described as an overwhelming moment of joy and disbelief.
The ticket had been purchased by the husband, who reportedly presented it to his wife in a lighthearted manner, suggesting it could be worth ₹3 crore. At the time, the remark was taken jokingly, with no expectation that it would turn into reality.
The couple, who are parents to three married children currently residing abroad on study visas, stated that they have not yet finalized plans for the prize money. However, they indicated an intention to allocate the funds responsibly, prioritizing family needs while also setting aside a portion for social and charitable initiatives.
The case highlights not only the role of chance in lottery outcomes but also the importance of timely verification of tickets, as the winning claim might otherwise have remained unnoticed despite extensive public reporting.
