PHAGWARA: Phagwara witnessed a peaceful protest on Friday as members of the Muslim community organised a march against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, alleging misconduct in connection with the removal of hijab and the treatment of Dr Nusrat Parveen. The protest was led by Sarwar Ghulam Shaba, Convenor of the Rashtriya Alpsankhyak Arakshan Morcha, Punjab Unit.
The protest march began from Jama Masjid in Gau Shala Bazaar and proceeded through the town to Gol Chowk in Tehsil Phagwara, District Kapurthala. During the march, participants raised slogans against the Bihar government and the BJP-led central government, expressing their opposition and demanding accountability. Upon reaching Gol Chowk, protesters burnt an effigy of the Bihar Chief Minister as a symbolic gesture of dissent.
Addressing the media, Sarwar Ghulam Shaba demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, alleging misbehaviour with Dr Nusrat Parveen. He called for a fair, transparent and unbiased investigation into the matter and urged that those found responsible be punished strictly in accordance with the law. He further stressed that Dr Nusrat Parveen should be provided justice without any form of political pressure or intimidation.
Following the protest, a memorandum was submitted to SP Phagwara, Madhvi Sharma, seeking registration of an FIR under appropriate legal provisions. Another memorandum was handed over to Naib Tehsildar Gurbachan Singh, addressed to the President of India, outlining the community’s concerns and demands related to the issue.
