Mohali Municipal Corporation in "High Action Mode" for the protection of girls and women

Mohali: The Mohali Municipal Corporation is soon going to install 100 cameras at the places where women and girls visit most of the places for the protection of women and girls.

 Under the Nirbhaya scheme, the Central Government is also providing some funds to the Municipal Corporations for this purpose. The Municipal Corporation has gone into "high action mode" for the protection of women and is going to spend about Rs. 4.5 crore for this purpose by investing additional funds in addition to the funds of the Central Government. A meeting of Mohali Municipal Corporation was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu in which Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, Commissioner Kamal Garg, DSP Traffic and other officials were present.

Disclosing this here today Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said that Punjab government has taken many steps for the protection of women but in spite of this atrocities against women were on the rise. Due to globalization, educated women are now working on an equal footing with men in every field in the society. Incidents of harassment and abuse of women and girls continue to occur even now. These conditions deprive many women of essential services.


Mayor Jeeti Sidhu said that in view of this situation, the Government of India has set up a Nirbhaya Fund through which it is proposed to upgrade the Surveillance Infrastructure in the cities for the protection of women. To this end, the state government has formulated Punjab Urban Local Bodies Surveillance Grid for Women Safety, PUNGRID-WS scheme under which CCTV cameras will be installed in more frequent places like girls' colleges, universities, educational institutions and markets.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said that under this scheme in the first phase 100 CCTV cameras would be installed in Mohali city. He said that these cameras would be monitored by the Punjab Police, various law enforcement agencies and the state government authority, which would significantly enhance the security of women.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said that the police department has identified the places where the crime rate of women is likely to increase. He said that on the basis of this information provided by the police, under the first phase 100 cameras were being installed in Mohali city which was taken by the Municipal Corporation considering its personal responsibility so that the women of Mohali city would feel safe and fearless and be able to come anywhere and  anytime for theirr work.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said that a detailed project report has been prepared in this regard and under this 100 cameras would be installed in Mohali city under first phase in Phase 7, Phase 3B2 market and in phase 5 near ITI for girls. There will be 80 fixed and 20 moving cameras with a total cost of Rs 4.50 crore.

Mayor Jeeti Sidhu said that where the cameras were going to be installed, it would not only help in curbing the crimes against women but also other crimes such as burglary and fights in the markets would be monitored and curbed. He said that people with criminal tendencies would now have to be vigilant as the vigilance of the police would be further enhanced after the installation of CCTV cameras.
