AMRITSAR: Under the able guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair, in collaboration with the Department of Laws, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar celebrated Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti at Lecture Theatre Complex of the University. The event organized was divided into three sessions; inaugural session, competitions viz; Poster Making, Debate and Model United Nations followed by prize distribution ceremony.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) Harvinder Singh Saini, Dean Academic Affairs. Prof. Paramjit Singh Judge, former Dean Academic Affairs was the keynote speaker on this occasion. In the inaugural session, Dr. Puneet Kaur, JRF, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair, introduced esteemed dignitaries. Dr. Pawan Kumar, Professor, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair, welcomed the guests and introduced about the chair. He briefed on the objectives of the Chair, and vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on social and economic justice.
Prof. (Dr.) Harvinder Singh Saini, in his presidential remarks, acclaimed the efforts put in the organization of this event to enhance the students' knowledge regarding the vision of Dr. Ambedkar.
Prof. Paramjit Singh Judge elaborated the life history of Dr. Ambedkar from sociological point of view; beginning from his birth to studying on scholarship in foreign university to becoming Barrister. Prof. Judge stated that Dr. Ambedkar was invited for a lecture by Jat Pat Todak Mandal, however, it was cancelled on Dr. Ambedkar's refusal to edit his lecture and it was later published by him as an essay titled "Annihilation of Caste.” Prof. Judge justified the role of Dr. Ambedkar as Chairman of Drafting Committee of Indian Constitution. He explained the whole process and time involved in drafting, discussing, and finalizing the Indian Constitution.
