Khaira Says Delhi Assembly Speaker’s Notice Supports Claim of ‘False Case’; Alleges Punjab Govt Trying to Suppress Dissent

ASHOK KAURA | January 10, 2026 06:12 PM

PHAGWARA : Senior Punjab Congress leader and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has alleged that a notice reportedly issued by the Speaker of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha to the Director General of Punjab Police and the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, has substantiated his stand that the Punjab Government acted with political malice by registering a case against him and other opposition leaders. In a strongly worded statement shared on social media,  Khaira said that instead of initiating appropriate action over the controversy surrounding alleged derogatory remarks about Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal chose to “victimise” opposition voices, including him, through what he termed a “baseless and politically motivated case.”

Khaira maintained that the Vidhan Sabha is an autonomous constitutional institution and that no external agency can ordinarily take cognizance of its internal proceedings. He alleged that despite this, the Punjab Police went ahead and registered a case against opposition leaders, which, according to him, reflects an attempt to silence criticism and curb dissent in the state. Accusing the government of misusing law enforcement agencies to target political rivals, he claimed that such actions were pushing Punjab towards what he described as a “police state.” The Congress leader said the notice from the Delhi Assembly Speaker had “vindicated” his stand and reinforced his assertion that the case was registered with ulterior motives rather than legal merit.

The Punjab Police has yet to issue a comprehensive response to Khaira’s claims, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has not officially reacted to his fresh remarks at the time of reporting. The development has added to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling dispensation and the opposition in Punjab, with the issue continuing to spark sharp exchanges over alleged misuse of state machinery and the limits of legislative privilege. Further clarity is expected as official responses and procedural details emerge.
