PHAGWARA: Tension gripped the Dhilwan area of Kapurthala after a violent clash broke out between supporters of Independent MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh and AAP workers ahead of the Block Samiti chairman election. The incident, which occurred outside the Block Samiti office, reportedly involved firing in the presence of the MLA, triggering panic and disrupting the election process.
According to initial reports, the clash took place in Zone Fattu Dhinga of the Sultanpur Lodhi constituency on Wednesday, when two groups confronted each other before the commencement of voting. The situation escalated quickly, leading to a scuffle between the rival factions. Following the disturbance, the election proceedings were halted.
Independent MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh alleged that one of his candidates was abducted, while another was prevented from entering the office premises. He further claimed that police personnel remained passive while AAP supporters allegedly set up blockades in the area.
On the other hand, AAP leader Sajjan Cheema accused the Rana group of resorting to violence and intimidation. He alleged that members of the opposing group opened fire when police attempted to take action against certain individuals. Cheema denied the allegations of kidnapping and claimed that AAP workers were peacefully present at the site before being attacked.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh also levelled serious allegations against the state government, accusing it of undermining democratic processes. He claimed that despite having majority support, their candidates were obstructed, and one of their associates was forcibly detained. He further alleged that firing was carried out to intimidate supporters and described the incident as a “black day” for Punjab politics.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kapurthala, Gaurav Toora, confirmed that aerial firing had taken place during the incident. He stated that a heavy police force was deployed at the spot to bring the situation under control and that the entire area has been secured. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the firing.
A case has been registered, and authorities are examining all aspects of the incident to ensure accountability and maintain law and order in the district.
