Army Rejects Verka Milk Powder Consignment; Khanna Alleges ‘Dairy Mafia’ Under Punjab Government

PHAGWARA: A major controversy has erupted after a consignment of milk powder supplied by Punjab’s cooperative brand Verka was reportedly rejected by the Indian Army over quality concerns, prompting sharp criticism from senior BJP leader and former MP Avinash Rai Khanna.

Addressing the media, Khanna alleged that the rejection of the consignment reflects poorly on the functioning of the Punjab Government and raises serious questions about the state’s dairy sector. He termed the development “shameful” and claimed that it indicates systemic lapses in quality control under government oversight.

Citing available information, Khanna said that approximately 125 metric tonnes of milk powder supplied to the Army Service Corps in Jammu had been returned after failing to meet prescribed standards. He added that the Army authorities have reportedly warned that if samples are not lifted within seven days, the consignment may be destroyed by a designated committee.

Taking a strong political stance, Khanna alleged that the situation points towards the emergence of a “milk mafia” under the state government’s watch, with Verka at the centre of the controversy. He further stated that supplying substandard products to the armed forces amounts to a serious lapse and termed it an “insult” to the country’s defence personnel.

Calling for accountability, the former MP demanded that the Punjab Government issue an apology to the Indian Army and initiate corrective measures to restore credibility. He also stressed the need for stricter monitoring mechanisms to ensure quality standards in products supplied to critical institutions.

The issue has sparked a wider debate over quality assurance in state-run cooperative brands and the need for maintaining stringent standards, particularly when supplies are meant for national institutions like the armed forces.
