CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) has been granted an Indian patent for a novel nanoemulsion technology titled ‘Nanoemulsion of Fungal Exopolysaccharide for Use in Dairy Industry’.
Dr.Ekta Chaudhary
The patent has been granted by the Patent Office, Government of India, for the invention of Prof Deepak Kumar Rahi (Department of Microbiology) and Dr. Ekta Chaudhary to PU.
The technology is a food-grade nanoemulsion-based nutraceutical formulation developed using an exopolysaccharide derived from Ganoderma gibbosum and flaxseed oil, a natural source of omega-3 fatty acid, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
The formulation is designed to incorporate and deliver omega-3 fatty acids while improving their stability and functional properties. It combines the nutritional benefits of omega-3/ALA with the antioxidant potential of the fungal exopolysaccharide.
Its potential usefulness lies in the fortification of dairy and other functional food products with omega-3 fatty acids. The nanoemulsion approach can help improve the stability and effective utilisation of omega-3 fatty acids in food formulations. The technology also has potential to reduce lipid oxidation and extend the shelf life of dairy products.
Prof.Deepak Rahi
The invention therefore provides a food-grade platform that could be useful in developing omega-3 fortified dairy products, nutraceutical formulations and other functional foods. Its use of natural bioactive components also combines omega-3 delivery with the potential antioxidant benefits of the fungal exopolysaccharide.
The application was filed on February 6, 2024, and the patent was granted on August 11, 2026.
