Panjab University Celebrates Independence Day With Patriotic Fervour
CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at the PU Parade Ground, with PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Meenakshi Goyal unfurling the National Flag and addressing the University community.
PU Registrar Prof. YP Verma, along with senior University officers, faculty members, staff, students, research scholars and other members of the University community, attended the celebrations.
The celebrations featured a parade, patriotic cultural performances, presentation of awards and participation by students, faculty, officers, staff and NCC, NSS and school contingents.
In her Independence Day address, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Meenakshi Goyal paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose courage and sacrifice secured India’s independence and called upon the University community to preserve and strengthen the values of freedom, justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Prof. Goyal highlighted PU's contributions to science, technology, law, literature, medicine, public administration and public life, and said its legacy should inspire it to respond to future challenges.
She emphasised that universities must go beyond classrooms and examination halls and become centres of knowledge, innovation, critical thinking and social transformation.

Referring to the National Education Policy, 2020, the PU Vice Chancellor said that it provided an important framework for multidisciplinary education, research, innovation, Indian knowledge traditions, skills and holistic development.
She also said that the India of 2047 would be shaped by their ideas, integrity, scientific temper, entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to the nation. She urged them to “dream ambitiously, think independently, question fearlessly, innovate continuously but always remain grounded in values”.
Prof. Goyal also said researchers must transform knowledge into solutions for national and global challenges in areas including artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, climate change, public health, biotechnology and sustainable development. “Excellence must go hand in hand with inclusion and opportunity,” she added.
Earlier, the programme began with the assembly of parade participants and invitees, followed by the arrival of the PU Vice Chancellor, unfurling of the National Flag, inspection of the parade and a march past led by the University Security. Contingents of PU Security, NCC, NSS and participating schools took part in the parade.
The cultural programme included a patriotic song by students of the Department of Music, a dance performance by students of Ankur School, a band formation by Ankur School, and a patriotic dance by students of Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Ratwara Sahib.
The programme also included Vande Matram, University Anthem, presentation of awards and a vote of thanks by Prof. Gurmeet Singh. The celebrations concluded with the National Anthem.
