From Cuttack to Cambodia: Dr. Soumya Ranjan Jena’s Inspiring Journey from Personal Loss to PhD Achievement

In a remarkable story of resilience, determination and academic excellence, Dr. Soumya Ranjan Jena, a son of a middle-class family from Sector-9, Avinab Bidanasi, CDA, Cuttack, Odisha, has brought pride to his family, city and state by being awarded the Doctor of Philosophy — PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from International Management University (IMU), Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

His doctoral thesis, titled “AI-Driven Energy-Efficient Edge Cloud Architecture with Renewable Energy Integration,” focuses on one of the most important challenges of the modern digital world: how to make cloud and edge computing more energy-efficient, sustainable and intelligent. The attached certificate records that the PhD was conferred upon Soumya Ranjan Jena in Computer Science and Engineering for research in sustainable cloud computing, intelligent edge systems and renewable energy optimization.
Dr. Jena’s achievement is not merely an academic milestone; it is a deeply emotional journey shaped by hardship, responsibility and hope. In 2010, just after completing his graduation, he lost his father, Late Panchanan Jena, to cancer. At only 21 years of age, he was faced with the painful loss of the person who had guided him throughout his early life and career. As the elder child, the responsibility of standing strong for the family came suddenly upon him. What could have broken his spirit instead became the foundation of his determination.
Rising from those difficult years, Dr. Jena completed his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from BPUT, followed by M.Tech in Information Technology from Utkal University. He also completed CCNA from Central Tool Room and Training Centre, strengthening his technical foundation in networking and computing. His academic journey reflects the power of perseverance and the belief that personal tragedy can be transformed into purposeful achievement.
His PhD research is highly relevant in today’s world, where artificial intelligence and data centres are creating increasing pressure on electricity systems. The International Energy Agency has reported that global electricity generation needed for data centres may rise from 460 TWh in 2024 to over 1,000 TWh by 2030, making energy-efficient and renewable-integrated computing a major global priority. In this context, Dr. Jena’s work on AI-driven edge cloud architecture, renewable energy integration, and net-zero optimization addresses a timely and socially significant technological challenge.
