PHAGWARA: A protest was staged outside the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Phagwara today in response to alleged police high-handedness in handling an assault case involving a local youth from Beedpuad village.
The demonstrators accused the police of wrongly registering a case against the victim, instead of taking action against those who attacked him.
According to protestors Parminder Bodh, Surinder Dhadda, Pradeep Mall, and Rakesh Kumar, the incident occurred on June 15 when Rakesh Kumar was returning home after closing his shop. He was reportedly intercepted and beaten by a group of young men. Rather than taking strict action against the attackers, police registered a counter-case against Kumar, which the protestors termed as completely unjustified.
Demanding an impartial reinvestigation and immediate cancellation of the case against Kumar, the demonstrators voiced strong dissatisfaction with the current police approach. The protest gained momentum until Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bharat Bhushan arrived at the scene and assured the protestors of a fair inquiry and justice. Following his assurance, the protest was peacefully called off.
