PHAGWARA: In a significant breakthrough in curbing the proliferation of illegal arms, Phagwara Police have arrested four youths and seized a cache of illegal weapons, live ammunition, and crude weapons during a targeted operation on Monday.
According to Superintendent of Police Phagwara (SP) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, a police patrol team received a tip-off from an informant about suspicious activity involving four young men riding towards Phagwara on a motorcycle while allegedly carrying illegal arms.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the police set up a checkpoint at a strategic location. The suspects were intercepted and taken into custody without incident. The accused have been identified as Priyanshu, Prince Kumar, Arshdeep, and Jashanpreet, all residents of the surrounding areas.
Upon thorough search, police recovered two country-made .32 bore pistols, eight live cartridges, and two iron rods, which were reportedly concealed under the shirts of Prince Kumar and Arshdeep. A Splendor motorcycle used by the accused was also seized.
SP Bhatti praised the alertness and prompt action of the patrolling team. “The arrest is a result of timely intelligence and effective ground coordination. We are committed to eliminating illegal arms from society and ensuring the safety of our citizens, ” she said.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Arms Act, and further investigations are underway to determine the source of the weapons and whether the accused are linked to any criminal syndicates or planned unlawful activities.
The four accused were presented before a local judicial magistrate on Monday. The court has remanded them to police custody for further interrogation.
Phagwara police continue to tighten their grip on illegal arms trade in the region and have appealed to the public to come forward with any information that may assist in ongoing investigations.
