MOHALI: The School of Social Sciences of the Rayat Bahra University organized an expert talk on “Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore and the idea of Nationalism in Indian Renaissance: A thematic analysis” here today.

Eminent scholar Dr Ronki Ram, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivering the talk dwelt on the history of development of modern India. He said the renaissance is generally marked as the pre-political phase of the anti-colonial struggle, a period when Indians were mainly engaged in social and cultural preparation for participation in the more “progressive” and “radical”, political programme.

The scholar elaborated the role of Sri Aurobindo and Rabindranath Tagore in the Indian renaissance and the valuable contribution made by them.

Dr Ronki Ram said the social and religious movements, popularly termed as the renaissance, which preceded the political struggles, are considered a necessary precursor to the coming of nationalism. Hence, nationalism is conceptualised as a natural outcome of the renaissance.

Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University, welcomed Dr Ronki Ram while Dr Parvinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University, introduced the speaker. The Vice-Chancellor listed the academic achievements of Dr Ronki Ram.

Dr Mehar Singh Manick, Head of the School of Social Sciences, who was the organizer of the event proposed a vote of thanks.
