CHANDIGARH: The 15th Panjab University Rose Festival opened today at the Prof R C Paul Rose Garden, drawing a large gathering of faculty members, employees, students and residents, with around 500 participants showcasing floral displays across 92 categories on the inaugural day.
PU Dean of University Instruction Prof Yojna Rawat, inaugurated the three-day festival, while Prof Y P Verma, Registrar, was the Guest of Honour. Senior university functionaries and former officials were present on the occasion.
The chief guest and other dignitaries visited the garden and exhibitions put up by campus bodies and partner organisations. Prof Rawat appreciated the efforts of the Horticulture Division in maintaining the garden and said the annual festival recognises its work while promoting environmental awareness.
Er Anil Thakur, Executive Engineer-II and organiser of the festival, thanked the Vice-Chancellor, University authorities and stakeholders for their support. He said the Rose Festival is a unique campus event where teaching and non-teaching staff, their wards and students participate with enthusiasm, and added that the Horticulture Division remains committed to maintaining high standards.
Several stalls offering food items, books, handicrafts and healthcare products were set up at the venue and witnessed steady footfall. A cultural programme by the Department of Music was held at the Old Convocation Ground in the evening.
Competitions including rangoli, painting, dance, slogan writing and mehndi will be organised on February 7, followed by a cultural programme by the Department of Youth Welfare. On February 8, events such as Rose Prince and Rose Princess, fancy dress, dance and collage making will be conducted, along with a fashion competition by UIFT and VD in the evening.
