136th Foundation Day’ of Khalsa College Governing Council Celebrated

AMRITSAR: Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) today celebrated its 136th foundation day and reiterated its commitment to provide value-based professional education in diverse fields and disciplines. Established on February 22, 1890, the Council, said the organizers, has journeyed through various phases from setting up of iconic Khalsa College in 1892 to making Khalsa University (KU) Amritsar functional in 2025, showing its dedication to disseminate education to every strata of society.

Originating from the renaissance period when society was facing various challenges in the form of ill setting-in, KCGC initiated a movement that has played an important role in the spread of modern education in Punjab. These words were expressed by Council President and KU Satyajit Singh Majithia on completion of a religious function organized to mark the occasion today.

He said that the journey is not only a historical pride, but also a symbol of the union of education and spirituality. He said that the purpose of the institution is not only to provide students with education from textbooks, but also to inspire high ideals and good character. KCGC honourary secretary and KU Pro-Chancellor Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina also echoed the spread of the educational institutions in the past decades in the diversified education sector.

He added the day today in 1890 the ‘Khalsa College Establishment Committee’ came into existence in Lahore, due to which ‘Khalsa College Middle School’ and ‘Khalsa College’ were established. He said that this same Committee has played its role in establishing various educational institutions under its alternate names ‘Khalsa College Society, Amritsar’ and then after the passage of time ‘Khalsa College Charitable Society, Amritsar’.

"The institutions running under the Society have made their unique place in the country and abroad and thousands of students have received education from here and are serving in important positions in different fields, bringing glory to the country", said KU VC Dr.Mehal Singh as he shed light on the glorious contributions of the Society in education, promotion of Sikh cultural heritage.

Principal of Khalsa College Senior Secondary School, Dr. Inderjit Singh Gogoani highlighted how KCGC proved as an institution of education, culture and service, which continues to inspire the coming generations towards a bright future.

On this occasion, a new book ‘History of Khalsa College Governing Council-1890 to 2026’, narrating 136 years glorious history of the institution by Dharminder Singh Rataul, Director, PR was released. Noted Raagi and Sikh scriptures proponent Bhai Gurmej Singh who have complied Sri Guru Gramth Sahib in the braille was honoured with citation and awards during the event KCGC office bearers, members, principals, deans and directors from Khalsa institutions were present.
