UN chief vows to continue all mandated activities despite Trump's cuts

UNITED NATIONS: Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is defiant that the world organisation will continue all its mandated activities despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US was cutting ties to 31 UN-related entities and ending funding. While he regretted the US decision, “all United Nations entities will go on with the implementation of their mandates as given to us by member states”, Guterres’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Thursday.

The US was legally obligated by the UN Charter to pay its assessed dues for the regular and peacekeeping budgets approved by the General Assembly, he said.

“The United Nations has a responsibility to deliver for all those who depend on us, and we will continue to carry out our mandates with determination”, he added.
