CHANDIGARH: Hosts Punjabi University, Patiala defeated Amity University, Noida (Uttar Pradesh) by 3-1 in the first quarter-final match of the North Zone Inter-University Football Men's Championship in Patiala today.
Inderbir Singh Randhawa scored the first goal for the winning team in the 17th minute while Chetan Kumar scored the second goal in the 37th minute to give Punjabi University a 2-0 lead. Tejinder Singh scored the third goal in the 72nd minute and Rohit scored the only goal for the opposing team in the 65th minute.
Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Jalandhar defeated Lovely Professional University, Phagwara by 3-0 in the second quarter-final league encounter. Sant Baba Bhag Singh University opened their account in the 37th minute in the 55th minute . They wrapped their match with a third goal in the 82nd minute.
In the fourth quarter final league outing Punjab University, Chandigarh defeated Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi 3-0.
In another quarter-final contest Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar defeated CT University Ludhiana 2-0 with the first goal in the 38th minute and the second goal in the 89th minute.
The league matches to be played tomorrow will be from 11 a.m. The first match will be played between Panjab University Chandigarh and Sant Baba Bhag Singh University Jalandhar and the second match will be played between Punjabi University Patiala and Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar at 2 pm.
