CHANDIGARH: Bir Devinder Singh former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha has ridculed former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh for his failed attempt to project himself as champion of Punjab cause.
In a statement issued here, Bir Devinder Singh said that the much puffed up media conference of the Former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh at Chandigarh on Wednesday has turned out to be a damp squib. It appeared as if he had been fielded by the Home Minister Amit Shah to defend the indefensible notification of the Government of India, arbitrarily extending the jurisdiction of the BSF in Punjab from 15 Kilometers to 50 Kilometers from the international border contiguous to Pakistan, without taking the State Government on Board.
He said that it was a pity that he has devalued his own Party, the Indian National Congress, to such an extent that he considers that congress is nowhere in the fight in the ensuing Punjab Assembly elections, due in March 2022. If his statement is taken on its face value then the credit or discredit squarely goes to him for destroying the Congress in Punjab at grassroots level beyond redemption during his tenure as Chief Minister. He should rather hang his head in shame that the overall decay he has nurtured in the past more than four years, making resurrection a very difficult task for the successive Government led by Charanjit Singh Channi.
The nuance of his barren desperation should be recognized from the fact that being a tall seasoned leader he has nothing to speak out in the PC and offer something credible for the future, except mentioning a huge note of achievements, of his tenure as Congress Chief Minister; which he could not even elaborate or articulate by himself. Whether the achievements, he was referring to, were his own or of the Congress Government? If Congress has performed so well under his leadership then why is the graph of the congress so low in Punjab, as per his speculations? It appears that ‘Captain’ is under tremendous pressure of the BJP, which is why he was talking paradoxically and feeling very isolated and lonely, not flanked by any of his former colleagues: no party MLA or MP was seen around, not even Rana Sodhi was seen around just because he lost the umbrella of the blessings of his parent Party; The Indian National Congress, he is now accusing unashamedly .
The removal of Capt. Amarinder Singh as Chief Minister, just five months before the general elections by the Congress High Command is the substantiation of the confidence and belief; that Congress Party foresees no threat from him whatsoever, in the ensuing assembly elections in Punjab he is not even a factor to be counted in the future political calculations of Punjab politics.
