Shubhkaran Singh's family join Punjab Congress protest outside SSP office Sangrur

SANGRUR: Today, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, led by Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, convened a protest outside the Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police Office. The purpose of this protest was to express vehement opposition against the BJP government and the Haryana administration, urging for immediate action to be taken, notably the filing of a FIR against Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij.

Warring addressed those present, stating, "Three days ago, a comprehensive three-page complaint was submitted demanding an FIR against those responsible for the tragic demise of Shubhkaran Singh, implicating the Home Minister of Haryana and the Superintendent of Police of Jeend. Regrettably, the Punjab Police's response thus far has been lackluster, with no discernible progress towards initiating the FIR. Why is this case being treated with such indifference compared to others?"

Vijay Inder Singla, AICC Joint Treasurer addressed those present and reiterated the need for the filing of an FIR – “The state government and the national government are in cahoots. While the Haryana Police continue their atrocities against our farmers, the Punjab Police remains silent and does not defend its own people. It is essential that an FIR is filed against the Haryana Home Minister otherwise the people will lose their trust in the law of the nation.”

Posing pertinent questions, Raja Warring continued, "Can Narendra Modi, along with the Punjab government, assure us that justice for Shubhkaran Singh will be secured through monetary compensations or employment pledges for his bereaved family? Also, bureaucratic impediments, such as the purported jurisdictional constraints and insistence on a postmortem report prior to FIR issuance, are unwarranted. It is our constitutional right, as mandated by the Supreme Court, to have an FIR filed based on a complaint."

He further lamented, "While Punjab’s intent is peaceful protest, the incitement of violence by the Haryana Police resulting in fatalities is deplorable. Pritpal Singh, another farmer from our state, has been subjected to brutality, sustaining injuries, yet remains detained in Rohtak without repatriation efforts by the Punjab Police. Why does our own administration not stand in solidarity with its people?"

Dalvir Singh ‘Goldy Khangura’, President DCC Sangrur added – “We are here to fight for justice for Shubhkaran Singh. Our fight is not only against the central government but also against the state government which has remained silent and has not helped the people of Punjab. We want to peacefully protest for our rights, but Haryana administration is inciting violence which is resulting in us losing our farmers. The right to protest is the constitutional right of every Indian and we should be allowed to head to Delhi.”

Regarding governmental accountability, the PPCC Chief remarked, "Statements suggesting the imposition of Governor's rule by the BJP are unsubstantiated rumours. Congress unequivocally pledges support to the Punjab government if such an instance arises. But, this should not result in the state government from taking action against the BJP and the Haryana administration. During Congress tenure, substantial assistance was extended to farmers, exemplified by Dr. Manmohan Singh's historic waiver of 72, 000 crores nationally, with an additional 4, 500 crores waived in Punjab."

In conclusion, PPCC Chief Warring asserted, "Punjab, historically, has made immense sacrifices for the nation, yet finds itself impeded from accessing its capital, akin to a blockade reminiscent of the India-Pakistan border. The complicity of Punjab Police in these circumstances is evident, orchestrated by both central and state administrations. Failure of the Punjab CM to address these concerns will not be pardoned by the people of Punjab. Punjab Congress remains resolutely committed to the welfare of its populace, transcending political divides, for we are all united as Punjabis."
