Punjab Police finally arrest former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in a fresh case of illegal colony

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police today arrested its former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini from Mohali where he came to join the investigation in a case of disproportionate assets registered against him by Vigilance Department.

Saini was evading arrest in various cases registered against him due to shield provided by Punjab and Haryana Court in at least two cases related to disproportionate assets and murder case of Balwinder Singh Multani, He was also granted pre arrest bail by the High Court in cases related to police firing in Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan during his tenure as DGP in the Parkash Singh Badal government.

Punjab Police today registered a fresh case of an illegal colony constructed by WWICS in Kurali and Saini was named in the FIR as one of the accused. Saini was arrested as soon as his questioning in unproportionate assets case. Punjab Police had raided his residence twice in the past but he escaped from his residence in sector 20, Chandigarh.

Even today Saini had approached the district court for pre-arrest bail in the fresh case registered against him but court directed him to join probe. He was arrested subsequently.

Capt Amarinder Singh government had set up SIT to probe the Kotkapura and Behbal kalan firing cases. The probe had indicted former DGP along with certain political bigwigs.

The arrest of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal who was home minister at the time of firing incidents cant be ruled out.
